is Darren Di Lieto, and this is the sixth survey of illustrators Ive run since 2011.Initially,we called the survey the Illus-trator Survey(2011-2018),but as of 2019,we renamed it the State of Illustration.Between the years 2003-2006,I was a full-time freelance illustrator.During this time,I set up Hire an Illustrator to stay connected with my fellow illustrators and give them a platform to further their careers and connect with clients. As Hireillo(Hire an Illustrator)is now my full-time job,I no longer have time to work as an illustrator, but with my 18 years of experience in this industry,I can offer advice on promotion, pricing and contracts while staying close to what I love. However,Im still an illustrator at heart and always will be.I also get to do a lot of art direction and have curated several exhibitions over the years. This means Im actively involved in multiple aspects of the industry along-side my main work at Hireillo. All this aside,I believe that with the passion I have for illustration and the creative industry as a whole,Im in the perfect position to compile and distribute the State of Illustration report.About the ReportThis report uses data collected from 1506 respondents, which includes freelance illustrators,in-house illustrators, artists and other creative professionals. The State of Illustration survey was open from 31st October to 11th December 2020.Our respondents are a mixture of ages, genders and nationalities. They are primarily social media users who are also fiercely independent as self-employed business owners.Due to the solitary nature of being an artist or freelance illustrator, many of them will likely be isolated for a good portion of their working day, with their social interactions primarily being limited to social media or communication devices rather than in-person.While our sample represents the creative industry,it will not offer a complete insight into the general working population, but that isnt the purpose of our survey. This year, like previous years, the State of Illustration is split into four sections. The first section will give you an overview of who we are and the groups that make up our industry. The second section is about the work we do and how we operate from day-to-day.Section three is all about income, money and how we make a living. The fourth section is about what makes us tick and the challenges we face, followed by the postscript.Where appropriate,we have made comparisons between our 2020,2019 and 2018 survey results, along with other publicly available survey data.Five artists were commissioned to create the illustrations that accompany the four sections of the State of Illustration survey and the report itself. The cover art is the illustration Imogen Fancourt created for the“work”section.A complete list of illustrators who contributed to this document can be found at the end of the report. The distribution or sharing of this document for profit or otherwise is strictly prohibited.0304Who Are We?This year is the second year we have accurately recorded our respondents geographical locations. We were pleased to see again that just over a third(549)of the respondents took part from countries where English isnt the native language. What makes that significant is that the survey, although international,is conducted in English. While we expect North America and the United Kingdom to dominate the results,we need representation from outside those areas to give a more balanced perspective of our community.North America United Kingdom Europe(Excluding rate are generally under a work-for-hire contract where the copyright belongs to the client on completion of the work. You must remember that the copyright to your work is a valuable asset. In broad, practical terms, transferring the copyright to a client should add 100-200%to what you would typically charge for an unrestricted eight-year license.Including copyright as standard when you sell very grateful.I also want to say a big thank you to everyone who shared the survey with their peers and got the word out about it.This year the State of Illustration report was the most in-depth analysis of the illustration and creative industry Ive ever done.It was a mammoth task to conduct the survey, promote it,sieve through the data and write this report. It took over 300 hours to create outside of my duties as the creative director and client relationship manager at Hireillo. As well as the hours I invested,I enlisted a graduate space systems engineer to help us analyse the data, along with deciding on the best ways to visualise it.Although this report might not be up to their usual scientific standard,it does an excellent job of turning the raw data into an easy to understand facts and figures. As a group,we are all part of the creative industry responsible for contributing over 100 billion per year to the UK economy alone. We need to take care of each other and ensure we all have a balance between our work and life. Our future is in our own hands,we need to embrace it we cant just sit idly by and wait for things to happen. Its not rocket science!Darren Di LietoCreative DReport
