China’s non-self-propelled drilling or well-drilling machinery industry has developed rapidly in recent years. The export of non-self-propelled drilling or well-drilling machinery has accounted for over 80% of the total output value of the industry. The industry has become an important pillar of China’s foreign trade industry and has made great contributions to the protection of national environmental resources and the stimulation of local economic development. In order to explore the import and export situation of non-self-propelled drilling or well-drilling machineryin the next three years, we compared the comprehensive data of this industry in 2018 and 2019 to analyze the development of China’s non-self-propelled drilling or well-drilling machinery export and import trade and industry competitiveness in 2023.

Analysis of Product Categories and Market Space

Non-self-propelled drilling or well-drilling machinery are divided into three broad categories, namely coiled tubing units, oil drilling rigs and floating drilling platform. By comparing the export amount in 2018 and 2019, we found that the total export amount didn’t show a significant change, but the proportion of each category slightly changed. In 2018, the exports of coiled tubing units accounted for the largest proportion (80.18%), followed by oil drilling rigs (18.81%) and floating drilling platform (1.01%). In 2019, the proportion of coiled tubing units and oil drilling rigs slightly increased to 83.44% and 16.56%, while the proportion of floating drilling platform decreased to 0.53%. This decline can be attributed to the increasingly stringent environmental protection policies in China, which reduced the demand for this type of products in the international market.

Analysis of Export Countries/Regions and Competitiveness

In 2018 and 2019, the main export countries and regions of non-self-propelled drilling or well-drilling machinery were the United States and Canada, accounting for 45.73% and 33.17% respectively, taking up nearly 80% of the total export amount of the industry. The export amount of some other countries are relatively small and less significant, making up only 20.10% in total. From 2018 to 2019, the export amount to US, Canada and other countries decreased slightly, except for European countries, which slightly increased.

The overall export price of non-self-propelled drilling or well-drilling machinery is still relatively stable, but the fluctuations of foreign currencies and oil prices will affect the export prices of different countries. The US Dollar, the strongest currency, is the most important currency in machinery export. According to the analysis, in the next three years, the US Dollar will be relatively weak, so the export prices of non-self-propelled drilling or well-drilling machinery to US and Canada will be relatively low, while prices of other countries/regions will not change much.

With continuous technological progress, more and more multinational companies have begun to enter the industry. As a result, the industry has become more competitive. Currently, in terms of enterprise competition power, the top three companies are GE, China National Petroleum Corporation and Bearings Special Equipment Co. Ltd , accounting for more than 41.70% of the total export amount of the industry. According to the current industry situation, we can predict that in 2023, competition will be more intensive, and only companies with high quality products, lower prices, better services and strong technological advantages can survive in the fiercely competitive market.

Analysis of Import and Export Total and its Comparative Analysis

In 2018, the export and import amount of non-self-propelled drilling or well-drilling machinery in China was $22.61 billion and $12.81 billion respectively. In 2019, the export amount of non-self-propelled drilling or well-drilling machinery slightly decreased by 0.22% to $22.56 billion; the import amount slightly increased by 2.85% to $13.15 billion, with the total import and export of $35.71 billion, which is higher than that in 2018. In the next three years, the development trend of China’s non-self-propelled drilling or well-drilling machinery import and export trade can be divided into two parts. In the short term, the import and export of non-self-propelled drilling or well-drilling machinery will be relatively stable, and the total import and export amount will not show significant increase or decrease. In the long run, the import and export amount of non-self-propelled drilling or well-drilling machinery is expected to continue to grow steadily, driven by the recovery of the international market and the development of China’s national economy.

Conclusion

In summary, the analysis of the import and export of China’s non-self-propelled drilling or well-drilling machinery market in the next three years shows a dual-characteristics of both declining trend and upward trend. In terms of product categories, coiled tubing units, oil drilling rigs and floating drilling platform will still occupy the main position in the market; as for export countries/regions, the main export markets still come from the US and Canada.
